Sunrooms Patio Enclosures, Four Seasons Sunrooms

sun room design

Designed as an extension of the living space, the cozy sunroom is covered with a wooden roof in red tones. Full-height windows are used in the space where the beams of the roof are shown without being hidden indoors and become part of the design. In the area where light colors are preferred as furniture, one sofa is covered with a fabric that literally expresses spring.

Shape Your Space

Using wicker weave furniture and rustic wooden tables also add a nice touch to the room. Sunroom furnishings give an extra bit of accent to the space by providing it with character and aesthetic style. This coastal sunroom design uses weave sofas and lounge chairs and bright splashes of red and rich orange on the throw pillows and sofa blanket cover. As with any room in your house, when it comes to sunroom decorating ideas, you’ll need to decide what is most important about the space and highlight its strengths. If you want to accentuate the view, choose low-profile furniture to keep the focus on the windows.

Essential Things to Know About Sunroom Ideas

This is perfect for families that prefer a nice surrounding view of the outdoors when they’re having their breakfast or dinner. One can choose to let sunrooms act as entrance vestibules for side or back entrances of the house. It serves as a nice transition space between the outdoors and the interior private spaces of an abode. Extra ceiling space added in these rooms helps regulate the temperature of the room by letting warmer air rise up to the top. This particular setup, with large french windows and a gable clerestory window set lets in ample amounts of warmth and light. Larger and more lavish sunrooms serve as the main living rooms or accommodating spaces for house guests.

Sunroom Flooring Ideas

Long and relatively narrow, this sunroom could have quickly become a mishmash of furniture and materials. Instead, the homeowner divided it nearly in half, creating living and dining zones in a tropical-influenced space. Using wicker and dark-stained wood coordinates with the textural wallpaper, while patterned pillows on the seating add bright color. These bright, airy sunroom decorating ideas demonstrate a savvy mix of patterns and colors. Upholstered rattan chairs counterpoint the white slipcovered sofa, which is decorated with an eclectic mix of textured pillows.

“A strong window game is a must for any sunroom,” says Ginger Curtis, interior designer and principal at Urbanology in Dallas. To maintain the “casual yet elevated” style, Curtis notes that a sunroom should feel like an extension of your house, not an outdoor patio. To do this, she recommends choosing furniture and decor pieces that don’t scream outdoor furniture. In the sunroom area, where the ceiling and wall surfaces are painted in gray, the colors preferred in colors that increase the energy of the space are used in blue and white tones.

Modern living room stylings can be used in many contemporary living room sunrooms. The modern and comfortable furniture in this stylish room makes the space. Employing bright, neutral colors really complements the natural light in terms of making a floor plan feel open and spacious. As an interior space and an outdoor space, sunrooms have the unique privilege of being one of the select few spaces that can accommodate almost any type of flooring finish. Depending on the type of subfloor system and construction, one could choose to use stone tiles, ceramic tiles, wooden flooring, or carpeting.

Window Display

Of course, lush potted plants will definitely help your airy kitchen feel like a large sunroom. If you fancy yourself a chef, try growing culinary herbs alongside decorative plants. For this effect, you’d want a more minimalistic space with a lack of clutter.

Four Season Sunroom Design in a Wooden Chalet

sun room design

A white sofa and two blue velvet chairs are placed as furniture, and a coffee table with a circular cut is preferred as a coffee table. The sunroom design, which has a narrow and long area with roof windows, is perceived as wide and spacious by using white color in general. The furniture used in the space is wooden furniture with classic touches. On the floor, a carpet with a traditional motif in vibrant colors is used.

This is a nice melding of the two, with a vaulted, beamed ceiling and unfinished walls accented by homey touches, including pretty window treatments and a contemporary sectional sofa. To add practical storage, consider baskets (which also serve as decorating accents) under furniture. If some of those are used less often, stealing space for a divided activity zone is OK. Here, most of the sunroom is used for living space, but a small, classical-style table and chairs offer a shady spot for dining.

The space might benefit from a large sectional or a set of wicker chairs – only you can decide which is right for your home. Only after the room’s functional needs are met should you think about introducing actual decor. Even if your sunny kitchen isn’t technically a sunroom, you can still harness the beauty of one with your decor choices.

This sunroom extends into a second sunroom, probably with opening windows. Sunroom with black and white furniture, and a minimal touch of modernity. You can picture walking on the beach in Los Angeles and spotting this sunroom, wishing that you knew the person inside so that you could share a bottle of wine and watch the sunset together. "Consider lighter shades of greens, yellows, blues, or even pinks for a fresh and airy feel."

While designing the sunroom with a sea view, a beach-style design concept has been adopted. Light colors are used in the place where comfortable sofas with wicker details are preferred. In the area where patterned and two-color flooring material is used on the floor, it is tried to give the appearance of brick on the walls. The glass windows look very stylish as well, perfect with the room’s modern style.

The walls are made up of bricks and the floor is covered with a creative, striped carpet. This looks like a really good place to play board games, or to supervise the kids fooling around on the swing set. Throughout this article we will go over all of the different features of sunrooms that you may not have though of before! "Choosing lighter colors to make the space look larger doesn't limit you to just white," she explained. "If there's enough space for a taller sofa, you can maximize the functionality of the area by incorporating a small dining table nearby," she said. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian.

If your garden is flourishing, consider building your sunroom right in the middle of it. Brunches, cocktail hour, and dinners will have an undeniably majestic feel when your table is surrounded by lush greenery. Plus, after sunset hits, you’ll be able to avoid those pesky mosquitoes, while still enjoying the garden views.

So much so that episodes like “The Sign” are quickly on their way to becoming permanently ingrained in television history. Not only has Reynolds expressed his love for the show and other members of the Hollywood elite, but he’s also incorporated the beloved blue heeler in his filmmaking. In an ad campaign for Zillow inspired by the iconic episode, Reynold’s Maximum Effort productions utilized the themes seen in “The Sign,” it’s clear how much thought and effort went into this “live-action” Bluey adaptation. Prior to Monmouth, Ziobro began her career in 2004 as a historian for the U.S. Army at Fort Monmouth, where her duties included managing the Command archive, exhibition development, oral history, and more.

Tweens enjoy the recurring exhibit called "Kirkwood Safety Town," which frequently opens in the weeks around back-to-school time in the fall. In this mock neighborhood, kids learn about fire, water, and traffic safety, and they can even get fitted for a bike helmet. Older kids also enjoy the chance to star in a television newscast and have fun with an electrically charged ball you can touch to make your hair stand on end.

Toddlers enjoy For Baby & Me, an exhibit area inspired by nursery rhymes. Preschoolers love Wonder Works, an area designed especially for younger children to explore the wonders of the world around them. Children ages five to 11 especially like the Children’s Village, a kid-sized community with a market, pet clinic, bank, library, garage and even a fishing pond. Founded in 1979, this interactive children’s museum provides fun hands-on learning activities that encourage creativity. The museum staff loves to help children understand science, history, and the world around them through exhibits that involve them in the action. Not only that but Cleveland's starters have registered nearly 50 more rebounds than Orlando's starters at a clip of 90-41. During a three-minute stretch in the second quarter, the defensive specialist knocked down two threes, had eight total points and snagged a couple hustle steals. He made several big plays thoughtout the game that got the crown going. Stratford-upon-Avon lies two hours northwest of London in the Midlands, more or less the heart of England. Today, it is one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing up to three million visitors a year. The Birthplace is its main attraction, followed by the cottage reputed to be the place where Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, grew up.

Kick-Off to Summer

The ACADEMY OF MAGICAL ARTS is one of the world’s preeminent magical organizations, dedicated to the advancement of the craft and the preservation of its remarkable history. And everyone, no matter how they got in, must dress to impress as the club takes the formal dress code very seriously. If you show up in jeans or other verboten items, you’ll be turned away whether you're a member or not. Alternatively, if you’ve already mastered sleight of hand, then consider applying and auditioning for a magician membership, whether your’re local or global.

How do I purchase a membership?

The closest Orlando ever got to Cleveland was a tie in the first quarter. J.B. Bickerstaff called Sam Merrill a weapon before Game 1 and he released that weapon for just four minutes on Saturday. Merrill probably could have earned more time had he hit a couple shots during the short stretch on the floor. The Magic haven't been anything special from three this season – they only shot 35% from long-range. It's also becoming obvious that they have almost no chance of beating Cleveland if they can't start getting some of the outside shots to fall.

Programs/ Operations

It’s not too tricky to score an invite to the Magic Castle, Hollywood’s members-only magician clubhouse. Since 1963, the century-old Victorian mansion has served as the sort-of-secretive home base for the Academy of Magical Arts. Step inside—reservations and formal dress are required, and no photos, please—and you’ll find performance parlors, secret doors, mysterious illusions and—well, we don’t want to ruin all of the surprises in store. Instead of spending years practicing your craft as a wannabe magician, you can gain access to the Magic Castle via these ways below (ranked from easiest to most difficult). Everyone from grandparents on down can have fun at The Magic House, but the exhibits are mostly designed for younger children.

Sliding into the DMs of a magician slated to perform at the Castle was once a sort of impolite but possibly effective means of gaining access. But now the Magic Castle’s upcoming show schedule only stretches about a week ahead, which makes it pretty impractical, too. That said, if you show genuine interest, you never know when you’ll find a membership-toting magician who’s sympathetic to your cause. Members can hand out guest passes like candy; get one and you’re in, though expect to pay upwards of $75 of dinner alone.

You can incorporate cascading crystals, hanging lanterns, or even miniature gardens within each tier. The verticality of multi-tiered chandeliers adds visual interest and makes a bold statement. You can really use any hanging light sources and glass blocks you’d like!

Connect the redstone lamps to a redstone circuit, and place redstone repeaters in between to create a delay. As the redstone circuit activates, the redstone lamps will cycle through the colors, creating a mesmerizing and ever-changing lighting display. The chandelier hangs from high ceilings using iron bar chains, with torches attached to wooden elements for light. Ideal for medieval or rustic builds, it’s best placed over a central area like a dining table in grand rooms.

Place one glass pane to the left of the center pane, and one to its right. First, go to the Nether dimension and gather some crimson wood and shroomlights. The lush cave is already beautiful with its shape and color, so you only need to gather a few more materials to transform it completely. Making banners in Minecraft is fearsome for some people, but the tutorial below can help you get there! Moreover, it’s worth noting that this design is quite expensive because of the anvils and hoppers.

The crystals or gems can be crafted from glass blocks or even colored wool to mimic the appearance of precious stones. The play of light through these hanging elements will add a touch of luxury and sophistication. Classic Crystal Chandelier

This compact Minecraft chandelier design works well for all wasted biomes, such as savanna, desert, or badlands. By using note blocks, you can right-click on them to play sound whenever you want. The only disadvantage is the difficulty of building this since you have to hold shift and right-click to place the spruce fences. On the other hand, chains, soul lanterns, and polished blackstone brick walls are common materials, so that you can find them easily in the Nether biome. With 13 lodestones in total, you have to use 13 netherite ingots and 104 chiseled stone bricks for this design.

Basic Chandelier Designs

If you’re ready to embrace the dark side and add a touch of mystery and intensity to your Minecraft builds, Nether-inspired chandeliers are the perfect choice. These chandeliers draw inspiration from the haunting beauty of the Nether, incorporating fiery elements and mysterious lighting effects. Let’s dive into the world of Nether-inspired chandelier designs and unleash your creativity. The modern chandelier is a stylish light source made from cobblestone walls, birch fences, iron bars, sea lanterns, hoppers, and white stained glass.

Final on the list is a bunch of cool aesthetic Chinese chandelier designs by WWY Craft. Modern is one of the popular building themes in Minecraft, so to give you a fulfilling list, here’s a modern Minecraft chandelier design. Gather branches of varying lengths and thicknesses, and intertwine them to form the structure of your chandelier. Hang lanterns or small hanging lights from the branches to create a whimsical and natural lighting display. For those who appreciate a mix of industrial aesthetics and vintage charm, the Steampunk Illuminator is a perfect choice.

Simple Medieval Chandelier

It allows you to experiment with different shapes, placements, and decorative elements without committing to a specific design. Use graph paper or a digital drawing tool to outline the basic structure and get a visual representation of your chandelier. This step will streamline the construction process and help you bring your vision to life. The required materials are one hopper, one chain, seventeen glass planes, nine glass blocks, and six end rods.

These designs incorporate natural elements and textures, infusing your virtual spaces with a touch of organic charm. Let’s explore some nature-inspired chandelier ideas to transform your Minecraft builds into serene and rustic havens. You can use glowstone blocks or other light-emitting materials as the centerpiece and add iron bars or chains to create a framework. Experiment with different patterns and shapes to make your chandelier unique. Use redstone lamps and redstone repeaters to create color-changing chandeliers.

Gardens need pretty lighting too and these ones which are bringing us back to nature fit the bill. Reddish brown in the wooden frame really brings out the golden undertones in the fruit on the plants, in turning highlighting the vegetation. The shade of blue could be perfect for an under the sea theme or just a universal decoration. The metallic design adds shimmer that takes it from ordinary to extraordinary. Here I used seven end rods (five horizontally along the chandelier, with one extra in front and one extra behind), as I really like how they give off white particles. We at Lumfardo are a lighting company based in Los Angeles California with a strong connection to (Pesaro) Italy and (Buenos Aires) Argentina.

With 5 netherite blocks and 8 diamond blocks as a chandelier base, your friends will be amazed the first time they walk into your home. This is a mysterious yet expensive Minecraft chandelier design idea on the list. While the third design uses the same material pattern as the second chandelier on our list, which is cobbled deepslates and azalea leaves with some modifications. String together your favorite Minecraft flowers to form a long garland, and drape it around the chandelier structure. This will create a stunning and fragrant centerpiece for your Minecraft build.

The mansion was home to the Saint Paul Diocesan Teachers College from 1927 to 1951. It housed various educational programs run by the nearby College of St. Catherine and administrative offices for the Archdiocese. In St. Paul, the city's main library building and the adjoining Hill Business Library were funded by him. In addition, he donated to numerous schools, including the Saint Paul Seminary. Hill was a member of the Jekyll Island Club (aka The Millionaires Club) on Jekyll Island, Georgia, along with J.

Marvel at the impressive house details such as chandeliers, stained glass, and hand-carved woodwork sprawled throughout the home. Solid, substantial, roomy, and comfortable is the new home of James J. Hill and family. There has been no attempt at display, no desire to flaunt an advertisement of wealth in the eyes of the world. Impressive, fine, even grand in the simplicity of design, but after all a St. Paul home.

This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person.

It sits on 2.5 acres and has views of both Beverly Hills and the Pacific Ocean.

The key to the Great Northern line was Hill's use of the previously unmapped Marias Pass. The pass had initially been described by Lewis and Clark in 1805, but no one since had been able to find it so Hill hired Santiago Jameson to search it out. Between 1883 and 1889, Hill built his railroads across Minnesota, into Wisconsin, and across North Dakota to Montana.

Visitors can take a guided tour or explore the home at their own pace. Seasonal walking tours on Summit Ave. and Nooks & Crannies tours are available seasonally and with limited availability. In 1891, after three years of building, construction was completed on Hill's new family home at 240 Summit Avenue in St. Paul. Built at a cost of $930,000 and with 36,000 square feet (3,300 m2), the James J. Hill House was among the city's largest. As with his business dealings, Hill supervised the construction and design himself, hiring and firing several architects in the process. The house has many early electrical and mechanical systems that predate widespread adoption in modern domestic structures.

Minnesota State Capitol

It remains one of the best examples of Richardsonian Romanesque mansions in the country. Though a Protestant, Hill maintained a strong philanthropic relationship with the Catholic Church in St. Paul and throughout the northwest. Hill's historic home is located next to the cathedral, largely due to the special relationship Hill's wife, a practicing Catholic, had with the Diocese. He was the first major donor to the Marquette University School of Medicine.

Grades K-3 Tuesday and Wednesday starting January 10, 2023 Students and teachers can discover what life was like at the turn of the 20th century in the grand mansion of Great Northern Railway president James J. Hill. Guided explorations of the mansion and inquiry-based activities will highlight stories from both the Hill family and their domestic employees, with an emphasis on comparing and contrasting past and present. James Hill died at the house in 1916, and Mary Hill died five years later. In 1925, family members donated the house to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors. I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture. Mary T. Hill kept a watchful eye over the household, including the large domestic staff of servants. She hired maids and cooks, inspected the kitchens, and served as hostess at countless dinners and receptions. "I feel it is necessary to know just where everything is and how it is," she commented in her diary.

Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. In addition to being a glittering mecca for film and television, Los Angeles proudly boasts a stunning trove of residential architecture, from splashy Mediterranean revival villas to sleek midcentury-modern marvels.

Newlyweds often lived in the enormous house until their own homes were completed, five of which were close by on Summit Avenue. In later years the house came alive with visits by grandchildren. Hill oversaw the planning, construction, and furnishing of the house as if it were a new branch of the railroad. He rejected stained-glass window designs by Tiffany and Company, saying they were "anything but what I want," and even replaced the architects when they ignored his orders to the stonecutters. He instructed his Boston interior design firm Irving and Casson to finish the project. Their work included a large number of custom furniture pieces on the first and second floors.

James will likely tear the house down and build a new, larger estate. The fourth floor features a stage in a room that could seat 200 people, a grand piano, and gymnastic equipment. Hill passed the business on to his son in 1907, but reported to work every day until a week before he died.

In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. This adorable home stands out on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. The rumor is that this house was owned by Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. You can park in one of the beach parking lots and walk down to the home or park by one of the neighbors.

To promote settlement and revenue for his rail business, Hill experimented with agriculture and worked to hybridize Russian wheat for Dakota soil and weather conditions. He also ran model experimental farms in Minnesota, such as North Oaks, to develop superior livestock and crop yields for the settlers locating near his railroads. The Democratic Party's continued enchantment with the populist William Jennings Bryan led Hill to support Republican presidential candidates William McKinley (1896 and 1900), Theodore Roosevelt (1904), and William Howard Taft (1908 and 1912). Hill was a supporter of free trade and was one of the few supporters of free trade with Canada. Hill chose to build his railroad north of the competing Northern Pacific line, which had reached the Pacific Northwest over much more difficult terrain with more bridges, steeper grades, and tunnelling. Hill did much of the route planning himself, travelling over proposed routes on horseback.

The school, which was all-male, consolidated in 1971 with the all-female Archbishop Murray School to form Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minnesota. The Hill Library has developed numerous online programs and now serves millions of small business owners worldwide. By early 1916, Hill began pouring more attention into philanthropy, donating thousands of dollars to various institutions as he privately struggled with a variety of increasingly painful ailments.

Pasadena Museum of History in the Feynes Mansion

The mansion cost a total of $931,275, the most expensive house in Minnesota when it finished, and the largest in the state as well. In 1925, the mansion was given to the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and for the next 50 years, it served as an office building, school, and residence for the church. The structure became a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and in 1978 the Minnesota Historical Society purchased the house with funding from the federal government and the Minnesota Legislature. Eames HouseThe longtime residence of creative powerhouses Ray and Charles Eames, this Pacific Palisades home was designed and completed by the couple in 1949, also as a part of the Case Study House program.

Hill bought three lots on Summit Avenue in 1882, during an era when wealthy citizens were scrambling to build fashionable homes in the neighborhood. The street offered a commanding view of downtown St. Paul and the Mississippi River area, making it a highly desirable location. The family previously lived in the Lowertown area in St. Paul, near Ninth and Canada streets.

Other rooms in the house, particularly on the second floor where most of the family members lived, do not have hand carved woodwork, but the woodwork is still richly colored and nicely detailed. To go with the hand carved woodwork in the formal dining room, there was also gold leaf plate on the ceiling. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house.

Hill teamed up with Norman Kittson (the man he had merged steamboat businesses with), Donald Smith,[6] George Stephen and John Stewart Kennedy. Together they not only bought the railroad, they also vastly expanded it by bargaining for trackage rights with the Northern Pacific Railway. In May 1879, the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway Co. (StPM&M) formed—with James J. Hill as general manager. Designed by Pierre Koenig, it's often called Case Study House #22. Its minimalist style and linear design elements connect with the grid of Los Angeles streets which can be seen from the windows. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955.

A reception was held on September 5, 1895, for Monsignor Francesco Satolli, the first Apostolic delegate to the United States from the Vatican. When President William McKinley visited in 1899, Mary Hill remarked in her journal that the evening was pleasant and quiet. Four of the Hills' daughters were married in the large drawing room. More than three hundred skilled craftsmen built the house over the next three years. In order to generate business for his railroad, Hill encouraged European immigrants to settle along his line, often paying for Russian and Scandinavian settlers to travel from Europe.

This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. Neutra VDL Studio and ResidencesFamed midcentury architect Richard Neutra conceived this glass-walled dwelling in Silver Lake with his son Dion to serve as their family home. Completed in 1932, the 2,000-square-foot structure burned down in the 1963 fire and was rebuilt by Dion with oversight from his father.

Clara Hill is the last of the Hill daughters to marry at 240 Summit. She moves with her husband, Erasmus Lindley, across the street to the Horace P. Rugg house at 251 Summit. Charlotte Hill marries George Theron Slade in the drawing room, with a wedding procession down the main staircase and hallway.

Neither side could win a distinct advantage, and the parties soon realized that a truce would have to be called. The winners of that truce were Hill and Morgan, who immediately formed the Northern Securities Company with the aim of tying together their three major rail lines. As the Hill-Morgan alliance formed the Northern Securities Company, Theodore Roosevelt became president and turned his energies against the great trusts that were monopolizing trade. One of his challenges at this point was the avoidance of federal action against railroads. If the federal government believed that the railroads were making too much profit, they might see this as an opportunity to force lowering of the railway tariff rates.

In the Hill House these are most striking in the porte-cochere. Richardsonian Romanesque is also characterized by an emphasis on horizontal lines and heaviness emphasized here by the deep window reveals. Rooflines become complicated and picturesque through the use of projecting pavilions, including sleeping porches on the northern end and 8 chimney stacks. In 1978, the Archdiocese transferred the mansion to the Minnesota Historical Society, which preserved the building and developed educational activities. Since then, the house has been open to the general public for tours, interpretive programs, and special events.

Chrysanthemums from the mansion’s greenhouses are used in the decorations. President William McKinley is received at the Hill mansion during his visit to St. Paul in October. A dinner is given for Monsignor Francesco Satolli, first Apostolic Delegate to the United States, during his visit for the dedication of St. Paul Seminary on September 5. Workers finish construction of the James J. Hill House, equipped with the most advanced technologies of its day, in 1891.

While many of these landmark homes are privately held, occupied by Hollywood A-listers, a few of them have been preserved and are open to the public. We’ve rounded up five of our favorites  that are well worth a visit. By the late 1870s, James Hill’s growing fortunes and family required a larger home that reflected his elevated status within the community.

Buzzers under the dining room tables allowed Mary Hill to discreetly summon waitresses during a meal. Thirteen bathrooms featured state-of-the-art plumbing, with hot and cold running water. An elaborate ventilation system, which included twenty-two fireplaces, ensured that air moved freely throughout the house. The house’s total cost, including furnishings and other expenses, came to $931,275.01.

The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle. That was epic and a long time dream of mine to see inside this historic lloyd wright house. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19. Cruise Missiles Rise To Top Of U S. Weapons Agenda

In 2020, Aerojet Rocketdyne demonstrated that an 18-ft.-long scramjet engine could generate 13,000-lb. Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems achieved the same result with another scramjet design in 2019. Both engines are now set to enter flight testing in 2021 under DARPA’s Hypersonic Air-Breathing Weapon Concept program; Aerojet has partnered with Lockheed, and Northrop has teamed up with Raytheon. A follow-on operational prototyping program, known as the Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile, is set to begin, and air-launched and sea-launched versions are possible.

In 2015, for example, a large aerostat being evaluated for cruise missile defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland broke free from its mooring and drifted across Pennsylvania. It’s long tether knocked out power lines and, once it landed in a grove of trees in Amish countryside, had to be shot at by State Troopers to get it to deflate. Ballistic missiles can be detected much earlier, which allows more time to detect, track, decide and act. For cruise missiles, decision makers may have only a couple of minutes and salvos of cruise missiles can attack from different directions, complicating the approach to defeating the threat.

How well Russia is able to maintain the operation and upgrades of those exports in the face of sanctions on its defense industry will remain to be seen. Despite the National Defense Strategy’s emphasis on this as the “decisive decade,” the MDR does not specify dates or timelines, and budget documents suggest that key new capabilities appear to be pushed to the 2030s. Other notable absences include the usual reference to arms control limitations, the need for increasing production quantities, the need for maintaining flexible acquisition authorities, and specifics on who exactly will manage this new “missile defeat” enterprise.

This led to it being the same 14 foot (4.3 m) length as SRAM, and the use of a fuselage with a triangular cross-section, which maximized the usable volume on the rotary launchers. The system was otherwise similar to Quail, using a simple inertial navigation system (INS) allowing the missile to fly a pre-programmed course. This led to the adoption of low-level attacks, where the bombers would fly below the radar horizon so they could not be seen on ground-based radars. Quail, originally designed for the high-altitude mission, was modified with the addition of a barometric altimeter to allow it to fly at lower altitudes. In the early 1960s, the Air Force began to question the usefulness of Quail in the face of improving Soviet defenses. During the Cold War, both the United States and the Soviet Union experimented further with the concept, of deploying early cruise missiles from land, submarines, and aircraft.

The Lockheed Martin-made cruise missile, called JASSM-ER (pronounced jazz-um), is designed to evade missile defenses and can fly more than 500 miles. Until now, the Air Force has focused on installing the missile on its non-stealthy aircraft, including the B-1 and B-52 bombers and F-16 and F-15E fighters, according to Pentagon budget documents. This would allow those warplanes to strike targets inside enemy territory without having to fly close to those targets.

For the first few decades of the post-World War II missile age, a ship generally sailed with a dedicated launcher for each missile type in its magazine. The steady expansion of the Chinese navy in recent decades has chipped away at the American’s fleet’s advantage in one key measure of naval capability—missile-launching cells. Raytheon was awarded a $207m-worth firm-fixed-price contract in March 2009 for 207 Tomahawk Block IV All-Up-Round (AUR) missiles.

Air Force received a final proposal for the Long-Range Standoff Weapon (LRSO) and is preparing to seek approval for the system’s engineering and manufacturing development. Scheduled for May 2021, about nine months earlier than expected, the pending authorization would officially create a program of record for the multibillion dollar nuclear... The Tomahawk is a long-range, unmanned weapon with an accuracy of about 5 metres (16 feet).

Air Force deployed Matador units in West Germany, whose missiles were capable of striking targets in the Warsaw Pact, from their fixed day-to-day sites to unannounced dispersed launch locations. This alert was in response to the crisis posed by the Soviet attack on Hungary which suppressed the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. In the Soviet Union, Sergei Korolev headed the GIRD-06 cruise missile project from 1932 to 1939, which used a rocket-powered boost-glide bomb design. The 06/III (RP-216) and 06/IV (RP-212) contained gyroscopic guidance systems.[5] The vehicle was designed to boost to 28 km altitude and glide a distance of 280 km, but test flights in 1934 and 1936 only reached an altitude of 500 meters. Compared to China, Taiwan is tiny, less wealthy on a national level and isolated. China can mass its best troops, ships and planes along a short geographic front and attack at the time of its choosing.

The production cost of a V-1 was only a small fraction of that of a V-2 supersonic ballistic missile with a similar-sized warhead.[6] Unlike the V-2, the initial deployments of the V-1 required stationary launch ramps which were susceptible to bombardment. Bomber-launched variants of the V-1 saw limited operational service near the end of the war, with the pioneering V-1's design reverse-engineered by the Americans as the Republic-Ford JB-2 cruise missile. While ballistic missiles were the preferred weapons for land targets, heavy nuclear and conventional weapon tipped cruise missiles were seen by the USSR as a primary weapon to destroy United States naval carrier battle groups. Three main versions of the cruise missile were being manufactured in the United States during the mid-1980s. All were single-stage, turbofan jet-propelled missiles with a cruising speed of 885 km per hour (550 miles per hour) and weighed from 1,200 to 1,800 kg (2,700 to 3,900 pounds) each.

The SLCM-N is a cruise missile launched from surface ships or attack submarines (SSNs)—not from ballistic missile submarines. The United States deployed these missiles on SSNs during the Cold War, but they were removed from service (along with most US tactical nuclear weapons) and eventually retired by 2010. The concept started as a long-range drone aircraft that would act as a decoy, distracting Soviet air defenses from the bombers. As new lightweight nuclear weapons emerged in the 1960s, the design was modified with the intent of attacking missile and radar sites at the end of its flight. The discussion of future technologies prioritizes sensors above all, followed by battle management and command and control (C2).

Another omission is any reference to acquisition authorities, the protection of which was affirmed in both the 2010 and 2019 reviews and in numerous legislative pronouncements. This may reflect the legacy of what is known as the “Trump DTM,” the Directive Type Memorandum. Even when the Pentagon was pushing acquisition authorities down across the services, the Trump administration began to undermine the acquisition authorities of the Missile Defense Agency. The 2022 MDR does, however, acknowledge the need for “adaptive acquisition approaches.” Rescinding the Trump DTM would help protect such approaches.

Cruise missiles of the United States include cruise missiles designed, built, or operated by the United States. The United States has deployed nine nuclear cruise missiles at one time or another. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the most recent cruise missile developed was the Kalibr missile which entered production in the early 1990s and was officially inducted into the Russian arsenal in 1994. However, it only saw its combat debut on 7 October 2015, in Syria as a part of the Russian military campaign in Syria.
